Dry Stone Walls
In general the vineyards of the Moselle valley are rather steep. But only 5 per cent of them are classified as those especially precious socalled ›Steilstlagen‹, the steepest among them.
Half of all the vineyards of our estate are sites of that type. Winemaking is very elaborate there and almost completely means hand work. But these vineyards deliver our finest wines. Here we gather our best selections for the Auslesen (Select Picking), the Beerenauslesen (Berries Select Picking) but also the healthy and golden grapes for our substantial dry Spätlesen (Late Harvest) – all of them different types of selections of our wines.
We would like to be able to do this in future as well and that is why we have to care for these steepest of vineyards and nurse them. Of very great importance in this is the restoration and preservation of the old dry slate stone walls of our terraces which is an elaborate and costly undertaking. But it is as vital for the individual microclimate as for the static structure of each hill.
Thus we will be able to preserve the unique cultural landscape of the Moselle valley. Here we have our roots, here our heart is beating.
So we see ourselves not only as wine makers but as the people that are responsible for the preservation of this type of landscape. That is why you may not only find rich pleasure for your senses in each bottle of our wines but also a bit of that love for our winemaking homecountry – real soulfood, in the true meaning of this word.
